This technically challenging project was delivered by Rapid in September 1999. The 11 metre yellow box eucalypt was secured from the Land Protection Board in Condobolin NSW. Rapid then worked with the artist, Lin Li, and the City of Sydney Council, to design the water reticulation system into and from the sculpture, to realise the artist’s vision; this required a complicated drilling process to permit the passage of water pipes. The artist then applied fibreglass and gold leaf and Rapid planned and delivered the transformation of the tree into its urban location where it became a symbolic conduit between hot, baking earth and living, flowing water. We were chosen on the basis of our reputation for completing difficult and complicated projects on time and for our “can-do” approach. Much of the work was completed on weekends and out of normal hours to fit Council’s program, and to minimise disruption to pedestrians and traffic.
